PROJECTS
It is the intent that this page will show active and proposed projects of the Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter of the SAR.
We are actively contributing money to the Kurth Memorial Library for the purchase of books related to the Revolutionary War.
Proposed projects are:
The Poster Contest is to stimulate interest in American History, specifically the Revolutionary War. Each school participating would judge their posters and submit to our chapter the best three in their opinion. At our January meeting we, the members of the Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter, would rank the three posters from each school as 1st, 2nd and 3rd. We would then judge the 1st place posters to select an overall chapter winner. This poster would be submitted to State competition. One winning poster from the State would be submitted for National Competition. The chapter awards would be $25 for 1st place, $15 for second and $10 for 3rd place. The chapter winner would receive a second $25 award. Awards would be presented at our March meeting. Sometime in April, we will present Certificates of Appreciation to all of the participants from all schools.
Posters are judged by the following criteria:
One thing to keep in mind is that the winning poster will be mailed to the State Competition, rolled up in a 3 inch tube. This will limit texturing.
See the Poster Guidelines
Poster contest deadlines. Posters must be submitted to the Chapter at least one day prior to the January meeting (Third Thursday). State judging will be in March and National judging in July.
The Cemetery Transcription is a project of the Angelina County Gen Web Site. The object is to record all the information shown on tombstones in Angelina County and to put this information on the internet for anyone interested to access. Many of the cemeteries have been recorded. One that has not and one of our members expressed an interest in is the Whitehouse Cemetery. Not sure we are ready for this at this time but if someone wants to take the ball and run ----- it requires making a map of the cemetery, numbering the sites, and then recording the information on the tombstones. For more information go to the Angelina County Gen Web page. (GPS info would be great)
Another project is the Eagle Scout program. We have a member with an Eagle Scout and this could provide a generous scholarship.
Open to all Eagle Scouts who are currently registered in an active unit and have not reached their 19th birthday during the year of application. (The application year is the calendar year, 01 Jan. to 31 Dec.) The year that Eagle was awarded is not restricted. College plans do not need to be completed in order to receive the cash scholarship. Three cash scholarship awards are given: As the National First Place winner - $8,000.00; Runner-up - $4,000.00; 2nd runner-up - $2,000.00. You may apply more than one year if you meet the age requirements but no more than $8,000.00 total may be granted to any one Eagle Scout.
Entrants need to complete only one application -- the one for the chapter competition. If it is a winner it is then used for the state competition, and if it is a winner again it is used for the national competition.
The application consists of:
1 .The two page application form
2. The Four Generation ancestor chart.
3. The 500 word essay
Applications should be mailed to the President of the Lt. Nathan Gann Chapter, currently Fred Preston at:
1306 Shady Lane, Lufkin, TX 75904 Or they can be dropped off at Gann Medford Real Estate office on South John Redditt Drive attention Fred Preston. Any questions, call 936-634-6086 or cell phone 936-366-4228.
